Why is blank clothing so timeless?

Published

on

Since the early 1800s, some form of blank clothing has been at the forefront of fashion trends in the West. While this initially took the form of suits in men’s fashion, it’s since spread into a wide range of other areas as well.

But why has this kind of aesthetic persisted through so many different cultural shifts, and why does it seem more popular now than perhaps ever before? Let’s take a closer look

Allowing character to shine through

One reason why blank clothing has remained so popular is a slightly nuanced, sociological one. Essentially, if you wear a blank outfit that doesn’t shout about any single element of your personality, you get to make that statement yourself, on your own terms.

Rather than letting a brand or big, colourful logo tell everyone around you who you are, you get to tell them yourself. This is an often unspoken but arguably still powerful reason behind why people tend to go towards blank clothing.

A stable foundation

A lot of people choose to wear outfits solely based on blank clothing, but this isn’t the only way to sport this kind of attire. A lot of people also choose to use blank pieces – whether a Screen Textiles T or a blank jumper – so that their more colourful elements (whether a handbag or some bright trainers) have something to stick out against.

Using blank pieces as a stable platform is a great way to make the best of both worlds, making it more reasonable to wear truly loud pieces without them becoming overwhelming.

Bucking seasonal trends

Practically speaking, unless you’re someone who is absolutely enamoured with fashion and enjoys shopping multiple times a year, chances are you’ll probably want to avoid having to commit to a complete wardrobe overhaul whenever popular trends choose to dictate.

Blank clothing is one of the easiest ways to practically buck the influence of seasonal trends from your personal approach to fashion. Your white T-shirt isn’t going to go out of style this year, the next, or likely even a decade further down the line, and you can rest assured that similar pieces will always be able to belong in your wardrobe.

Subtly smart

Lastly, blank clothing still manages to hang onto a certain subtle smartness that makes it suitable for most occasions. Some black shoes, black trousers and a white t-shirt won’t look out of place in a lot of offices, but also won’t look over the top in a lot of cafes or bars.

Being able to wear these outfits in multiple different settings can make them very attractive to a lot of wearers, and is a big reason behind their ongoing popularity.

Blank clothing has been around for centuries now, and likely won’t be going anywhere any time soon. It’s a pretty failsafe way to continue adding to your wardrobe as the years go by, without having to worry about whether or not what you’ve bought will still be fashionable at some distant point in the future.
