Virtual Reality, or VR, is a technology that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Using VR glasses, the user is immersed in a virtual world. In this world, you can look around and interact with objects and other users. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about Virtual Reality.
Types of VR glasses
There are different types of VR glasses on the market. All of them have their own specifications and price. The best-known brands are Oculus, HTC and Sony. Oculus is best known for the Oculus Rift. These are VR glasses used mainly for gaming. HTC has the HTC Vive, another popular VR glasses that is also widely used in the gaming world. Sony has the PlayStation VR, which is designed specifically for use with the PlayStation 4. Besides these well-known brands, there are other VR glasses on the market, such as the Samsung Gear VR. The Samsung Gear VR is an affordable option that works with a Samsung smartphone. You can also find cheap VR glasses that are made of cardboard, for example.
Applications of VR
Virtual Reality is often used for gaming. This is because it really takes you into the world of your game. Some VR glasses also come with controllers that you use when gaming. Besides gaming, VR also has many other uses. For example, VR is used in the medical sector for training and simulations. Surgeons can use VR to practise operations without the need for a patient. VR is also used for therapies, for example for people with anxiety disorders or PTSD. In addition, VR is increasingly used in the education sector. Using VR, students can learn about different subjects in an interactive way. Virtual excursions are also becoming increasingly popular, where students can take a virtual tour of a museum or historical site, for example.
The future of VR
The future of Virtual Reality looks promising. More and more companies and organisations see the potential of VR and are therefore investing in developing new applications and technologies. For example, HTC is working on the HTC Vive Focus vision. These are standalone VR glasses that do not require an external computer. These glasses focus mainly on simulation and mixed reality. The latter means creating a combination between reality and virtuality. Think, for example, of expanding your workspace by also adding a virtual computer or screen.
